UAE marks Earth Day with pioneering biodiversity, clean energy, water security initiatives

ABU DHABI, 22nd April, 2026 (WAM) — The United Arab Emirates joins the world in marking Earth Day, observed annually on 22nd April, to promote international efforts to address the escalating challenges of climate change and their adverse impacts, including threats to biodiversity, air and ocean pollution, rising temperatures, floods, and other climate-related phenomena.

The UAE stands out as a global model in addressing climate challenges and achieving sustainable development across environment, energy and water sectors, through an integrated framework of long-term strategies and initiatives. These include the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, the National Climate Change Plan of the UAE 2017–2050, the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, the adoption of a green economy approach since 2012, and the launch of the National Climate Adaptation Action Plan.

In 2026, the UAE continues to roll out a series of qualitative initiatives and projects in environmental protection, clean energy development, and green technology innovation, further strengthening its global sustainability standing.

The incident resulted in a minor injury to an Indian national, according to Abu Dhabi Media Office.

Svitolina, Pegula reach Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships final

DUBAI, 21st February, 2026 (WAM) — Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and American Jessica Pegula have qualified for the final of the 26th edition of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (WTA 1000), following their semi-final victories today at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium.

In the first semi-final, seventh seed and two-time Dubai champion (2017, 2018) Svitolina overcame third-seeded American Coco Gauff in a marathon match lasting three hours and three minutes. Svitolina secured her spot in the final with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 victory.

The second semi-final saw fourth seed Jessica Pegula defeat her compatriot and second seed Amanda Anisimova. Despite dropping the first set, Pegula rallied to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a match that lasted two hours and two minutes.

Svitolina and Pegula will face each other in the final on Saturday, competing for one of the most prestigious titles on the WTA 1000 circuit.

Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Serh Group sign strategic sponsorship agreement

This partnership reflects the Council’s commitment to strengthening collaborations with leading national institutions and supporting the sustainability of sporting and cultural events that embody the UAE’s authentic identity.

ABU DHABI, 23rd December, 2025 (WAM) — President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan today received a phone call from His Excellency Jonas Gahr Støre, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Norway.

The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation across various sectors, particularly in the economic, investment, and developmental fields, in support of their shared interests and long-term vision for growth and prosperity.

They also reviewed regional and international issues of mutual concern, with a focus on the latest developments in the Middle East. Both sides stressed the importance of maintaining the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and ensuring the sustained and unimpeded delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid to civilians through all available channels.

SHARJAH, 23rd October, 2025 (WAM) — The Sharjah Institute for Heritage recently welcomed a group of students from the University of Hong Kong as part of their efforts to encourage cultural sharing between different communities.

This visit, organised in partnership with the University of Sharjah, aimed to introduce the students to the rich heritage of the UAE and how it is preserved.

The students enjoyed a field trip to the Shis Heritage Village and the historic areas of Khorfakkan. During this tour, they learned about traditional Emirati architecture and lifestyle, especially in the mountainous regions. They were able to see how ancient Emiratis lived in harmony with nature.

The group also visited the Traditional Crafts Museum in Khorfakkan. Here, they explored various tools and methods used in traditional crafts, gaining insight into professions that are an important part of the local culture and history.

The students shared their admiration for the diverse culture and rich heritage of Sharjah. They appreciated the important work done by the Sharjah Institute for Heritage in sharing this knowledge with new generations, promoting values of openness and understanding between different cultures.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) affirmed its solidarity with the government and people of Cyprus over this tragedy and expressed its sincere condolences to the families of the victims, as well as its wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured.
